Network Video Recorders (NVRs) are basically powerful PCs with specific software that provides the same kind of functionality for compatible IP Cameras and Video Servers as DVRs do for analog cameras. Video (and possibly audio as well) from the IP Cameras and Video Servers is already compressed and digitized when connected into the NVR through a network port.

In general all NVRs will display, record, playback and allow remote network access, including Internet access. The amount of supported recording space varies, and can include the capability of recording to network hard disks. Video analytics, to some degree are often included and remote monitoring software may also be provided.

The functionality of the NVR software is what really differentiates one NVR from another. Many IP cameras come with free NVR software included. In general, this type of software is extremely “bare bones” in operation and is not suitable for use in a professional installation.

Sentry Security Systems Inc. offers two types of NVRs – the Sentry V Series and the Sentry LP Series. These two types of NVR are function and feature compatible with the DVRs in their respective lines. This provides several enormous advantages:

• Features of the NVR software are the same as their respective DVRs and benefit from the many years of evolution of the DVR software, giving NVRs of superior performance while being easy to use.
• Users of Sentry LP and V Series DVRs will already know how to operate the LP and V Series NVRs – the software environment is basically the same. User and installer training is minimized and operation becomes much easier and faster.
• Enterprise class installations can easily be made of Sentry LP or V Series DVRs and NVRs with remote access of both from the same PC or PCs using the same user interface
