Video Servers

Video Servers are firmware based video processors that accept video input from analog cameras through BNC ports. Input analog video is digitized, compressed and in some cases multiplexed by the Video Server and output through a single network port. Video Servers are available in single and multi-camera formats.

Under embedded firmware control in the Video Server, analog video is digitized and compressed using various compression methods. Video compression is normally carried out using hardware compression chips with MPEG4 and H.264 being the most widely used compression methods.

Video output from Video Servers can be sent via LAN, Wi-Fi, WAN and Internet and received through the network port(s) of compatible Network Video Recorders (NVRs) or Hybrid DVRs as well as PCs running compatible remote view or browser software. Each type of Video Server uses its’ own compression protocols, so compressed digital video from any one type of Video Server must be received by a compatible system running the appropriate decompression Codec.

Video Servers generally are bundled with their own network access software that allows video from those video servers to be viewed and sometimes recorded, although it is common that recording can only be accomplished on an external hard disk directly attached to the video server. It is this software, coupled with device compatibility, more than anything else, that determines how useful a Video Server will be.
